1871 Will Give 10 Startup Institute Students Full Scholarships This Fall

This article originally appeared in ChicagoInno. Shortly after the announcement that the Startup Institute is moving its Chicago headquarters to 1871, the two organizations' relationship is starting to take shape.

1871 is giving out 10 full Startup Institute scholarships to celebrate the program's first cohort hosted in 1871's expansion space. It is intended as a one-time scholarship fund. The full eight-week course normally costs $4,750.

The scholarships are available to 1871 members, people with a referral from an 1871 member, or an 1871 community partner organization, said Jenn Yee, director of the Startup Institute Chicago. She doesn't expect many active 1871 members to apply.

"The real benefit to 1871 members - as many are working at early-stage startups - is to be able to refer people who they think are terrific and have the startup mindset, but may not yet have the skills to work at, or contribute meaningfully to their companies," Yee said in an email to Chicago Inno.

The scholarships are expected to be awarded to the Startup Institute's fall cohort, and applications are being accepted until September 22. Interested students can apply here, and applicants should reference the "1871 Scholarship" in their application, accompanied by the referring 1871 member's name and company name, Yee said.

The Startup Institute offers four tracks of study: Web Development, Product & Design, Technical Marketing, and Sales & Account Management.

"We're looking for highly motivated individuals who want to join the startup ecosystem and who are looking to make the transition to a job in tech," Yee said.
